Trussell is the former president of Tempur Sealy International. After convincing the Swedish creators of Tempur Pedic to allow him to sell their mattresses and pillows in the U.S., Trussell started his company by selling the first mattresses out of his car, haggling with Brookstone's merchandising reps and mailing conditional free samples to chiropractors. In 2003, Trussell took the company public and in 2012 the company bought Sealy for $228.6 million. The company’s market cap, as of Aug 2014, was $3.61 billion. In 2013 annual revenues were $2.5 billion and annual net income was $78.6 million. The company currently employees 6,700.
